The beauty of the online world

This week we are talking about online archives and how they can be a positive for online history. Many archives allow you to upload your own information (usually to be reviewed then posted) about whatever the online archives subject is and then you get to be a part of logging history. Due to the fact that so much of modern history especially in the last 10-20 years is on peoples phones or laptops it is important to have places like online archives where people can share their information before it gets deleted or lost in the world wide web. The Northern Virginia Digital History Archive is a great example of this, a place where you can easily upload photos. There is a space for a quick description of your photo as well as a map so you can identify the exact geographical location the photo came from. The best part is that you do not have to put your name, you can upload with ease and anonymity.  I decided to post about sites and landmarks around where I grew up and currently live, places that would be so familiar to a native but never though of by someone passing by.

Another great example of this and something you can look around yourself is the Online Archive of California, the website is very extensive and really has a section for everyone. They have a detailed maps of highlighted locations, a list of institutions like libraries, schools, and museums that pertain to California history, and a way for you to contribute to the website as well. This website is a great resource for anyone looking to learn a lot more about California. It is a little overwhelming and could use some organization, maybe even some photos to liven up the look of the website.

Two weeks from now our final projects are due so I am going to update you on how mine is going. Right now I am doing research, building up information that i can plug into my website once I create it.
